Screener for Afterschool Alliance.
Pure joy!
— Sara Davis Powell, Belmont Abbey College
A novel and extraordinary window into the world of early adolescence.
— Penny Bishop, University of Maine
A terrific documentary and an authentic portrait of what it means to be an early adolescent today.
— Phyllis Fagell, Author “Middle School Matters”
A documentary filmmaker spent one year embedded in a “startlingly upbeat” public middle school in NYC producing an unprecedented collection of deeply authentic observational footage about the daily lives of 10-14 year olds.
- authentic, unfiltered interactions of 10-14 year olds with their peers and adults
- commentary directly from students about their social and emotional lives
- a view into a school that embraces early adolescence with joy, flexibility, and deep acceptance
Afterschool Alliance has partnered with the filmmaker to provide these inspiring, unfiltered, and essential documentary materials (and discussion guides) to all Leadership Circle participants. The goal of the project is to help reverse the narrative of early adolescence as a negative time — and support afterschool staff in decreasing the stress and distress experienced by 10-14 year olds. We hope you will use the materials to:
- Engage afterschool students in meaningful conversation
- Catalyze dynamic professional development sessions with experienced afterschool staff
- Prepare new staff to work most effectively with students
-
Connect with parents and families about what to expect developmentally
